A dramatic situation in Nova Scotia ended tragically after a man who was the subject of a province-wide emergency alert was fatally shot by police officers. The Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT), the province’s independent police watchdog, has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Emergency Alert Prompted Residents to Lock Doors
The incident began on Wednesday evening when officers responded to reports of an armed man in the Chelsea area. Authorities issued an Alert Ready emergency notification around 6 p.m., urging residents in Lunenburg and Queens counties to secure their homes and avoid picking up hitchhikers. The alert remained active for several hours before RCMP cancelled it at 9 p.m., indicating the public safety threat had been neutralized.
Fatal Encounter the Following Morning
According to SIRT’s preliminary findings, RCMP officers returned to the Chelsea area the next morning after receiving additional reports of a man carrying a firearm. The suspect was identified as the same individual who had triggered the emergency alert the previous day. During the encounter, one officer discharged their weapon, striking the adult male.
Despite immediate first aid efforts at the scene, the man was pronounced dead. SIRT confirmed in an official statement that the investigation remains active and no additional details will be released at this time. The watchdog agency is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, including cases where individuals are injured or killed during interactions with law enforcement.
