Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has strongly condemned recent Iranian military actions targeting commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf region, describing the attacks as both unacceptable and completely unjustified.
During a diplomatic visit to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Minister Anand met with her Saudi counterpart and reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to standing alongside Persian Gulf nations as tensions with Iran continue to escalate. The minister emphasized that while ceasefires are inherently delicate, targeting civilian vessels crosses a clear line.
The diplomatic condemnation comes amid a volatile situation in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical trade routes. Following U.S. President Donald Trump’s declaration that Iranian attacks on ships transiting the strait effectively ended the ceasefire, American forces launched new airstrikes against Iranian targets early Thursday, prompting retaliatory actions from Tehran against Gulf countries.
Prime Minister Mark Carney, speaking from the NATO summit, echoed the strong Canadian stance against Iran’s actions. The Prime Minister characterized Iran’s behavior as irresponsible and expressed support for the American military response, calling it an appropriate measure under the circumstances.
The escalating conflict in the Persian Gulf raises concerns about global trade disruptions and regional stability, with Canada joining its international allies in calling for de-escalation while firmly opposing Iranian aggression against commercial shipping lanes.
