Canadian authorities continue their aggressive crackdown on India-based organized crime, with the immigration tribunal ordering the deportation of yet another individual linked to the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Jashandeep Singh, described by law enforcement as a “bottom-tier” associate operating in Edmonton, becomes the latest Indian national facing removal from the country due to alleged involvement in violent criminal activities.
From Student Visa to Criminal Allegations
Singh arrived in Canada in 2022 on a student visa, with his parents reportedly borrowing money to send him to an Edmonton college in hopes of securing a better future. However, his aspirations took a dark turn when Edmonton police identified him through video footage recovered from seized phones, connecting him to criminal activities within the gang’s hierarchy.
According to testimony presented at the Immigration and Refugee Board hearing, Singh was captured on video holding a firearm that was allegedly used in an extortion-related shooting in Surrey, British Columbia on May 19, 2025. The footage reportedly shows him pointing the handgun at another individual’s head. Police also allege he was present when the same weapon was discharged in Edmonton hours later and subsequently hid the firearm from authorities.
Defendant Claims Videos Were Birthday Party Jokes
During his defense testimony, Singh denied gang membership and any involvement in hiding weapons. He claimed the incriminating videos were filmed during a birthday celebration for Arshdeep Singh, whom he described as a school friend. Singh also stated he was intoxicated from marijuana gummies at the time and was merely joking when handling the weapon. However, the refugee board found him to be an unreliable witness, citing “numerous inconsistencies” in his statements to investigators.
Extortion Networks Targeting South Asian Communities
The case underscores a troubling pattern identified by Canadian law enforcement: extortion networks are actively recruiting Indian nationals in Canada on student and work visas to carry out criminal activities. According to Edmonton Police Service Detective Kevin St. Louis, every individual identified during the investigation holds temporary foreign worker status or a student visa. The Bishnoi gang, led by Lawrence Bishnoi from an Indian prison, has been linked to widespread extortion targeting South Asian business owners and individuals across British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario.
