Ottawa residents were caught off guard Thursday night when an unexpected fireworks display lit up the sky over LeBreton Flats, leaving many wondering why they received no advance warning about the 12-minute spectacle that began shortly before 11 p.m.
Safety Concerns Behind the Secrecy
City officials have now revealed that the decision to keep the fireworks under wraps was intentional. The Special Event Advisory Team, which includes representatives from Ottawa Police, emergency services, and public health authorities, determined that publicizing the event could have created dangerous conditions by drawing massive crowds to the areas surrounding Bluesfest.
The fireworks had originally been planned for Canada Day celebrations but were postponed due to severe weather conditions. Rather than waste the already-prepared pyrotechnics, officials coordinated with Ottawa Bluesfest to incorporate the display into the festival’s opening night. According to the Department of Canadian Heritage, disarming the primed fireworks would have posed significant risks to the crew handling them.
Residents Express Frustration
The unexpected nighttime display quickly became a trending topic on social media, with numerous Ottawa residents expressing confusion and frustration over the lack of notification. By Friday morning, the city’s bylaw department had already logged 38 formal complaints about the surprise fireworks.
Ryan Perrault, the city’s general manager of emergency and protective services, acknowledged that the decision created disturbances for some residents, particularly those unprepared for the late-night noise. City staff have committed to reviewing public feedback during a post-event evaluation to determine whether similar situations should be handled differently in the future.
