A British citizen has received a prison sentence of three and a half years after admitting to manslaughter in connection with the tragic death of a beloved Ontario restaurant owner. The case has drawn significant attention due to the international manhunt that followed the fatal incident.
The Fatal Confrontation
Robert Evans was brought to justice after being apprehended in Scotland and subsequently extradited to Canada in 2024. The charges stemmed from a violent encounter in 2023 that claimed the life of Sharif Rahman, the owner of The Curry House restaurant in Owen Sound, Ontario. Rahman passed away one week after being attacked outside his establishment during a confrontation about an unpaid dining bill.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
During today’s hearing at an Owen Sound courthouse, the judge accepted a joint submission from both prosecution and defense attorneys regarding the agreed-upon sentence. However, due to credit for time already spent in custody awaiting trial, Evans will likely serve less than twelve months behind bars before being transferred to Canadian immigration authorities for deportation proceedings.
According to court documents, Evans struck Rahman in the face during the dispute, causing the restaurant owner to fall and strike his head on the pavement. The impact resulted in a fractured skull and brain hemorrhage, injuries that ultimately proved fatal at a London, Ontario medical facility.
Family Members Also Face Justice
Evans was not alone in facing consequences for this tragedy. His father, Robert Busby Evans, and his uncle, Barry Evans, were both extradited to Canada and sentenced to 21 months each for their roles as accessories after the fact. Evidence presented in court revealed that the uncle drove Evans away from the scene, while his father purchased airline tickets to help him flee back to the United Kingdom.
In an emotional statement delivered in June, Evans offered an apology to Rahman’s grieving family. He expressed deep remorse, stating that the incident haunts him nightly and that he is disgusted by the harm he has caused. The case serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly a minor dispute can escalate into irreversible tragedy.
