The Durham Regional Police Service is mourning the tragic loss of one of their own after a 27-year-old police cadet was killed in a devastating traffic collision on Tuesday. Tyrone Magbitang, who was traveling to the Ontario Police College alongside a fellow recruit, lost his life when their passenger vehicle collided with a transport truck.
Durham Police Chief Peter Moreira confirmed the heartbreaking news, describing Magbitang as a compassionate individual with tremendous potential. The young recruit had joined the service as a special constable in May 2023 and was selected to become a full police constable recruit just this past April. His fellow cadet remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the truck driver escaped without physical harm.
In a touching tribute shared on social media, Durham police remembered Magbitang as someone who believed deeply in helping others and making a positive difference in his community. After completing his Police Foundations education, he pursued his dream career in public safety with determination and humility. Those who worked alongside him praised his kindness, professionalism, and the lasting impression he made despite his short time with the service.
Ontario Solicitor General Michael Krezner and Premier Doug Ford both expressed their condolences, acknowledging this as an unimaginably difficult time for the families involved and the entire Durham police community. Regional representatives also paid tribute, noting that although Magbitang’s policing career was just beginning, his choice to pursue a path of service deserves deep respect and gratitude. The Ontario Provincial Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the fatal crash.
