Fraudulent Purchases Lead to Arrest at Superstore
A 21-year-old man from Vaughan, Ontario, is now facing serious criminal charges after allegedly attempting to use fraudulent payment methods to buy thousands of dollars worth of baby formula and feminine hygiene products at a Whitby supermarket.
The incident unfolded late Tuesday evening at a Real Canadian Superstore located on Taunton Road West. Loss prevention staff contacted Durham Regional Police around 10:20 p.m. after detecting suspicious activity involving the payment methods being used by the suspect.
Investigation Reveals Earlier Fraud Attempt
Authorities report that the same individual had allegedly attempted a similar fraudulent purchase earlier that day at another Real Canadian Superstore location in Ajax. When officers arrived at the Whitby store, they located and arrested the suspect inside the premises without incident.
The investigation took a more serious turn when police discovered the suspect’s vehicle in the parking lot. The car was found with two different licence plates attached, raising additional concerns about the nature of the alleged criminal activity.
Thousands in Stolen Goods and Replica Firearm Recovered
A thorough search of the vehicle revealed merchandise valued at more than $5,700, consisting primarily of baby formula and feminine hygiene products. Police also recovered a replica handgun from inside the car.
The accused now faces multiple charges including fraud over $5,000, unauthorized use of credit card data, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. He has been released on an undertaking and is awaiting his court date. The allegations against him have not yet been proven in court.
