Air Canada has officially named Anko Van der Werff, the current head of Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), as its next Chief Executive Officer. The announcement puts an end to months of speculation about who would take the helm of Canada’s largest airline.
Van der Werff will replace outgoing CEO Michael Rousseau, who announced his retirement back in March after nearly two decades with the company. Rousseau’s departure came amid controversy earlier this year when he faced public criticism for not offering condolences in French following a tragic crash that claimed the lives of two pilots.
The incoming CEO brings extensive international aviation experience to the role. SAS, which counts Air France-KLM among its partial owners, confirmed it will begin searching for Van der Werff’s replacement following the announcement. The Dutch executive is expected to officially join Air Canada by the end of January 2027.
